I Will Do My Work Honestly

by Tobi Blake

Just for today…

…I will not worry.

…I will not be angry.

…I will be grateful.

…I will do my work honestly.

…I will be kind to all living things.

These are the five Reiki principles I have grown to love.

Yesterday morning, as I worked on AJ before his long day, I repeated these principles in my mind as mantras. One principle stuck out to me. I asked myself, “What does it mean to do your work honestly?”

I pondered this question and allowed the answers to flow through me.

When I do my work honestly, I am fully in the present moment, in a state of deep awe, love and gratitude— for life, for the eternal now, and for the trust of the human, plant, or animal in front of me. As I enter this state of overwhelming wonder and love, I feel a rushing river of warmth and light flowing through my physical body and into another.

When I do my work honestly, I let go completely. I turn the thinking mind off and allow love to flow freely through me. I am unattached to the outcome of the session. I am not worried about what the person is thinking about. I do not care what their thoughts or opinions are about the work I do. I am not concerned if they think my practices are odd. I allow the entire experience to move through me and trust the energy will go exactly where it is needed.

When I do my work honestly, I have no personal ties to the work. If I am trying to meet my own emotional or spiritual needs through the person in my care, the work is not done with integrity. There is no intention but love.

When I do my work honestly, the mind is in a state of total stillness and deep awareness. My only job is to be a clear channel. Thoughts are a distraction that cause buriers in the flow and so they are muted. If the mind is extra active and begins to speak, I quiet it by mentally repeating a simple mantra.

“I am not the body. I am not the mind. I am pure energy.”

“I am light. I am love. I am Reiki.”

“Breathe in. Breathe out.”

“I am grateful for this perfect moment.”

“I am here now.”

Or a simple “Ohm” will do.

When I do my work honestly, every sense is engaged. I am connected in deep empathy and love with the being in my care. Often, I hit a spot of physical tension and am moved to weeping. Intense visuals and physical sensations often accompany these empathic flashes of pain, sadness, aching and longing. Empathy is what pulls the pain; surrender is what releases it.

When I do my work honestly, I am fully immersed. I cannot tell where my body ends and the other’s body begins. The flow is so powerful that we are one, until openings are created so the energy can pour freely out of the body and back into the Universe’s, to be reincarnated once again. Each time I work on another, I am reminded, “There is no ‘other.’”

I am grateful for the continued blessings Reiki brings to my life and for the opportunity I have to share it everyday.

Namaste.
